德比**英語的derby
「德比戰」的**並不是簡單的事情。首先英文單詞de r b y 這個詞的意思從字面上來講，有兩個，乙個是英格蘭中部的德比郡（相當於中國乙個省），當然這裡有一支英超球隊；另乙個意思是大賽馬會，這是英國最著名的賽馬大會，建立於2023年，獎金最為豐厚，比賽地點在倫敦南部的賽馬場，它的名字叫做der by是因為創辦者名叫德比伯爵。
從這兩層意思上不可能看出為什麼乙個城市的兩支球隊舉行的比賽叫做德比之戰。這種說法儘管每天都出現在英國報紙上，但對於它的起源，大多數英國人也不知道，記者曾詢問過很多足球記者，都說不上來。最後英國資格最老的足球記者、《星期日泰晤士報》的布萊恩·格蘭威爾解開了這個典故。
他說，德比大戰其實與德比郡有關係，19世紀初，足球儘管還沒有發展為有組織的比賽，但在英格蘭已是非常流行的體育運動，尤以德比郡為最（在足球發展程序發揮了重要作用，開了很多先河的諾丁漢森林俱樂部就在德比郡，包括護腿板以及球網等都是從這裡開始第一次使用的），儘管規則並不完善，但德比郡中心城市德比市比賽已經很多，球迷數量也很大。2023年，德比市兩支球隊相約，每年6月的第乙個星期二，舉行一場比賽，這場比賽一開始只是地方性的，但隨著時間的推移，逐漸在整個英格蘭傳播開來。德比大戰的叫法於是傳開了。
而德比大戰，對於推動足球規則的統一和2023年英格蘭足總的成立，甚至2023年英格蘭足球聯盟和各級聯賽的創立，都有著直接或者是間接的影響。
「德比」(derby)一詞**於英語，原指英國德比郡。德比是舉辦賽馬的地方，因為那裡盛產名馬，後來英國很多賽馬都是出自德比，因而在英國賽馬中往往是德比馬在對抗。德比後被引申到職業化的足球、橄欖球、籃球和冰球等俱樂部賽事中，演繹成「同城之戰」。
德比雙方出於爭奪球迷、拉攏贊助商的需要往往對比賽傾盡全力，**也盡力渲染。
歷史上的德比大戰，經常伴隨著金戈鐵馬的火併，曾湧現出一幕幕驚心動魄的「悲喜劇」。久負盛名的「同城雙雄」包括義大利公尺蘭城的國際公尺蘭和ac公尺蘭以及羅馬城的羅馬隊和拉齊奧隊等。
